Another DVD format battle could arise in China, warn industry experts.
Chinese research firm CCID Consulting has said that the development of Red-Ray high-definition DVD could lead to a battle with the growing Blu-Ray format, reports vnunet.com.
The firm says that the development of the Blu-Ray market in China is being restricted by high prices and disc shortages, with the Red-Ray format holding a potential price advantage over its more established rival.
CCID estimates that China produces 94 per cent of global DVD players. Furthermore the implementation of Red-Ray could reduce production costs. China still needs to build up support for the new format and establish production supply chains.
Sony won the battle of the high definition DVD formats when Toshiba axed its rival HD DVD format. In February, US retail giant Wal-Mart announced it would only stock Sony's Blu-Ray format.
