Red-Ray Will Rival Blu-Ray in New HD DVD Battle

Another DVD format battle could arise in China, warn industry experts.

Chinese research firm CCID Consulting has said that the development of Red-Ray high-definition DVD could lead to a battle with the growing Blu-Ray format, reports vnunet.com.

The firm says that the development of the Blu-Ray market in China is being restricted by high prices and disc shortages, with the Red-Ray format holding a potential price advantage over its more established rival.

A new range of Sony Blu-Ray DVD players have been announced by the company.

The new machines, the BDZ-A70 and BDZ-T90, both come after Sony announced last year that it would make Blu-Ray Disc standard on its digital video recorders.

New HD Update for Xbox

A new update will be available for the Xbox 360 High Definition DVD player.

Microsoft has said that the update will improve compatibility with "certain titles" and offer "additional support for network features".

The new Xbox 360 HD update will automatically update for Xbox Live members with a manual download option also available. The update will be available from Xbox.com in the near future.

Microsoft had previously said that they were not making a HD update for the Xbox but would continue to invest in its on-line service which allows users rent HD movies.

First Blu-ray Live Titles Announced

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced its first batch of blu-ray titles which will allow more bonus features over the internet.

A release date of April 8th has been targeted for the first two films, 'Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story' and 'The 6th Day'.

Both titles will feature exclusive bonus material which can be accessed via the internet, and will be released on the new "profile 2.0" of blu-ray.

Blue-ray disc profile 2.0, known as BD-live, will provide the "ultimate interactive film experience" according to Sony.

Sony has announced the new update for the Playstation 3 will enable users to run interactive features on Blu-ray movies.

No Blu-ray for Microsoft Console

Microsoft has announced it will not develop a Blu-ray add-on for the Xbox360. It plans to concentrate instead on digital downloads.

Recently Microsoft had sold a high definition DVD add-on box and there were rumors of a Blu-ray version to follow.

There were also stories in the media about the development of a possible Blu-ray compliant Xbox being developed.

Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360, said in an interview with Reuters "Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience".

With the format war over Amazon.com has cut the prices of films on Blu-ray and HD DVD.
